I took over an existing chimney sweeping business in the mid 1980's. The business had been handed from father to son, I brought the business from the son who taught me as much as he could, but I soon realised that that there was a lot that I could do to improve the methods used in sweeping chimneys to make it a cleaner and better experience for our customers, and also the ability to keep customers rooms cleaner by using different methods of blocking them off. I learnt a lot by mixing with and listening to other sweeps in the industry. I had one of my eureka moment's when I visited a German chimney sweeping school back in late 1990 when I was a member of N.A.C.S (The National Association of Chimney Sweeps) and saw the need for qualifications within the industry.
In order to achieve Qualifications for UK chimney sweeps, a like minded group of us left N.A.C.S. and formed the Guild of Master Sweeps which is based on qualification and the sharing of information between members. My wife Gina started to help me back in the mid 1990's and enjoys the work as much as I do and we have worked together ever since (unless I am training other sweeps). I have seen different methods of power sweeping chimneys both in America & Germany where I have visited other chimney sweeping organisations, and my son in law and I have developed this power sweeping technology for chimney sweeps in U.K giving our customers even cleaner chimneys than ever before.
Subsequently the National association of chimney sweeps has exceeded the guilds previous standards so i have rejoined NACS, as i feel it is now a more powerful group with better qualifications.
